Studio Egret West is the masterplanner, architect and landscape architect for Millharbour Village. In addition to the design of new high-quality place, it is the final opportunity to secure the delivery of London Borough of Tower Hamlet’s original Millennium Quarter Masterplan.

With 1500 homes proposed in 6 buildings between 35 and 45 storeys this is high-density living at its most challenging. We worked closely with the council’s in-house planning and urban design team to move the discussion away from the architectural focus of the towers and on to one about the uses and ingredients that could contribute to the new ‘village’.

Through a series of public consultations and stakeholder workshops this led to a proposal that included a new two-form entry school, a relocated and expanded Montessori school and a dance academy, two new parks including a playground and 1500 dwellings.

Our strategy moved the scheme into a position where all key stakeholders and land owners agreed on the proposals, design principles and massing before the client committed to starting the detailed planning consent.

Detailed planning submission was granted in summer 2015 having been positively received by all stakeholders with the GLA in particular supporting the ‘exemplar hyper density design for London’ in their Stage One Report.

Studio Egret West’s detailed proposals comprise three residential led towers. Each of the towers offers a different take on high-rise living. Wrap around winter gardens, double height amenity spaces and carefully planned apartments all offer a different way to enjoy living high above ground level.

A new public realm creates a journey through a variety of public spaces, including play areas, parkland, streetscapes, schools entrances, terraced gardens and a waterside walkway.

The fusion of masterplanning and landscape architecture is a consistently proven strength of the fundamental 50 / 50 architecture / urban design foundation of Studio Egret West adding significant social, environmental and economic value to our projects.
