The Flour building at the heart of Ancoats in Manchester  is a residential building designed specifically for the rental market. Working closely with the client Manchester Life, we have designed a mix of 140 flats that surround a peaceful internal square. The rental sector relies more so than others on its social cohesion to retain its tenants and we have given particular focus to social spaces and a sense of community.

In one of the hearts of the industrial revolution, this building embraces the tonality of the surrounding red brick industrial mills  and it's plan follows the strong grid of this conservation area. The cut in the block relates directly to the axis of the street and creates an obvious sense of arrival and a memorable vista.

Unusually, the carpark level is elevated to the first level ensuring a continuous active frontage of commercial uses at the street level. The transparency of corner cafe helps to accentuate the presence of the listed adjoining Romanesque church.
