SEW On Tour: The London Mastaba

We spent yesterday afternoon basking in the sunshine and marveling ‘’The London Mastaba’’, the latest installation by the enigmatic, Bulgarian-American artist Christo.

The object is Christo's first major public, outdoor work in the UK, and will float on the Serpentine Lake at Hyde Park from June 18 to September 23, 2018.

The piece comprises 7,506 horizontally stacked barrels which rest atop a floating platform, stretching 20 meters into the sky and 30 meters wide. Christo’s idea for the pink, red and blue sculpture was originally conceived in 1977 with his wife, Jeanne-Claude, who died in 2009. Based on the trapezoid shapes of mastaba, an Arabic word for bench in ancient Mesopotamia, the temporary sculpture is the realisation of the artistic duo's shared dream of creating a floating version of a form that has fascinated them for half a century.
